Sheave wheels at the top of the headframeBackground

A compilation of material shot during a visit by members of the Shropshire Mines Trust (SMT) to the vintage vehicle and engine rally at Astley Green Colliery Museum in Lancashire, in April 1999.

Underground loco on the narrow gauge railwayThe DVD features the SMT Ruston-Hornsby engine on display.

Plus: some of the Museum exhibits, including a trip to the top platform of the 30m high steel lattice headframe (on the English Heritage at Risk register since 2010 and the subject of a fund raising campaign to save it), some views of the enormous 2460kW (3300hp) Yates & Thom steam winder, the largest in Europe; and a short trip on the museum narrow gauge railway.

The museum site is protected as a Grade II Scheduled Monument and is managed by volunteers of the Red Rose Steam Society, who gave unstinting help to us during this visit.
