In spite of modern mass production there is still a need for specialist hand crafted locks.
Ralph Jackson, the locksmith featured in this recording, has worked with locks all his life, following his grandfather and father into the trade.
Ralph carefully guides the viewer through the steps involved in the construction of a pair of steel English padlocks, in a typical Willenhall backyard workshop.
Making the locks by hand the filing and adjustments of the various parts are all done by eye.
Produced in association with the Lock Museum, Willenhall and Walsall Metropolitan Borough Council in 1990.
