The large horizontal winding engine house of Freehold Colliery. Background

This recording follows the Shaft treatment and capping operations at Muxton Bridge Colliery in January 1988.

Featuring an interesting beam pump support (probably worked by a small horizontal engine) and the nearby large horizontal winding engine house.

Capping of two of the shafts, nearing completionThe compilation also features the excavated remains of the Lilleshall Company's Lodge Blast Furnaces and the canal branch that served them.

These sites now form part of the Granville Country Park in Telford, Shropshire, which includes the site of the last coal mine in the county, Granville Colliery.
